If you're not vegan, you probably didn't know that World Vegan Day is coming up on Nov. 1. But you don't have to be strictly vegan to get into the spirit of things and celebrate along with your South Bend neighbors who opt for plant-based food. For just that one day, why not go vegan and see what it's like? You might find you feel better.
It may be you're looking at South Bend homes for sale on World Vegan Day, but may we suggest pausing for a bit to try one of these activities to mark the day?
- Sample vegan restaurants in your area.
- Host a potluck for those in your immediate social circle, and challenge them to come up with vegan dishes.
- Bring some vegan foods home for your family to try, such as plant-based milk, cookies, or even meat substitutes such as vegetable protein.
Here are some of those vegan options in our area you might want to try for takeout, delivery, or dining in at a distance.
- Pinellia Vegan, 3601 Edison Road Suite D, South Bend, IN 46615
Pinellia Vegan offers a wide selection of all-Asian foods on its extensive menu. If you think you're going to miss seafood when you order your appetizers, maybe not so much when you see what's on the menu: Oshitashi, or cold, boiled spinach rolls with soy-citrus sauce; Vietnamese-style Summer Rolls with shredded vegetables, bean curd, and moo-shu sauce; and Mango Avocado and Cucumber rolls. Move on to the extensive list of salads, soups, and main courses, and you may never eat meat again.
- Nom Nom Pho Asian Kitchen, 211 N Main Street, South Bend, IN 46618
Bringing together the flavors of Vietnam, Thailand, Japan, and Korea in what the restaurant describes as "flavorful fusion," Nom Nom Pho Asian Kitchen is not strictly vegan but offers plenty of vegan options. Try tofu or avocado spring rolls for appetizers, or better yet, go all out with the Asian Loaded Fries, vegan version, with sriracha mayo and peanut sauce. Curries and stir-fries are all available with tofu. For something different, try the Tofu Bun Noodle Salad.
- Cafe Navarre, 101 N. Michigan Ave., South Bend, IN 46601
Located in a historic building in downtown South Bend, Cafe Navarre is known for its great service and fine food. Although non-vegans favor Cafe Navarre for its seafood and fresh fish, vegans will have no shortage of options, particularly from its soup and salad menus, including the Mushroom Soup and Navarre Salad (hold the bleu cheese). For dinner, try the Ratatouille. Order online for takeout; you can also dine outside.
- LaSalle Grille, 115 W. Colfax Ave., South Bend, IN 46601
LaSalle Grille is located in the city's oldest commercial building in the downtown area. Known for its steaks, locally raised chicken, and varied seafood offerings, LaSalle Grille welcomes vegan diners with a few specialties. For salad lovers, there's the LaSalle Grille House Greens; try the Mexican Corn for a side, and as your entree, the Sweet Chili-Glazed and Grilled Tofu Steaks with Stir-Fried Vegetables.
- Thyme of Grace, 2714 E. Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, IN 46615
Looking for a delicious vegan lunch? Look no further than Thyme of Grace for a simple but satisfying food experience. Choose a black bean Baby Cake as an appetizer, followed up by a salad (try the Monaco, but ask them to hold the bleu cheese) or Cream of Mushroom Soup with Hazelnuts.
