National Bike Month-Cressy & Everett Real Estate

Our real estate agents are proud to live in a region with such a rich variety of outdoor attractions. Michigan's Harbor Country is a destination for everything from fishing and boating to hiking and birdwatching—and now it's time for cyclists to enjoy their time in the spotlight.

May is National Bike Month, and we can't think of a better place to enjoy it than Harbor Country. If you're in the area checking out Union Pier homes for sale, you might consider taking time out of your busy schedule to explore our area's beautiful bike paths and trails!

Get Ready for National Bike Month

Ever since it was first established in 1956, National Bike Month has given cyclists from coast to coast an extra reason to celebrate the sport they love so much. National Bike Month is sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists, and in addition to throwing a spotlight on bicycle enthusiasts, it offers a great opportunity for newcomers to join their ranks and give it a try.

There's no end to the benefits of cycling. It's great for the environment, it saves you money on gas, it's great exercise, and it's a lot of fun. As a month-long celebration, National Bike Month seems to gain momentum every year, and there are plenty of ways to celebrate in Harbor Country!

Explore Harbor Country by Bike

With miles of lakefront, lots of meandering trails, and seemingly endless backroads, Harbor Country seems to have practically been made with bicyclists in mind. Plus, there are some great local resources for anyone looking for a place to ride in the area:

  • Backroads Bikeways
Backroads Bikeways is a fantastic local organization that provides maps of 20 self-guided bike tours through Harbor Country, ranging from 5 to 60 miles in length. Following backroads through rolling farmland, wooded hills, and rural communities alike, these bike routes provide a broad overview of what makes Harbor Country such a beautiful place to live. Maps are available for free download through the Backroads Bikeways website.

  • Harbor Country Parks and Preserves
You'll find a lot of great cycling options in public parks throughout Harbor Country. Chikaming Township Park and Preserve has a great new mountain bike trail, and Love Creek County Park is also a popular spot for mountain biking. Check out Harbor Country Parks to learn more about cycling in local parks, and be sure to learn about the individual rules for each park; bicycles are not allowed in some areas.

  • U.S. 35 Bicycle Route
The 500-mile U.S. 35 Bicycle Route is a grand adventure for long-distance cyclists. Generally following the Lake Michigan lakeshore from from Indiana through Michigan to Sault Ste. Marie, Canada, this bike route passes directly through Harbor Country, giving local cyclists a great opportunity to hit the road.

  • The Marquette Greenway
Once completed, this exciting ongoing project will provide an unbelievable resource for cyclists. Stretching 58 miles from Calumet Park in Chicago to downtown New Buffalo, Michigan, the Marquette Greenway will span three states and provide a continuous hiking and biking route all along the Lake Michigan shoreline. So far, 28 miles have already been built or funded, and plans are underway to break ground on new sections in the near future.

Just a short drive from Chicago, Michigan's Harbor Country has gained a well-deserved reputation as one of the best regions in the Midwest to enjoy the outdoors. Whether you're into cycling, swimming, canoeing, or wildlife watching, we think it's a great place to call home. Contact us today to learn more about finding your dream home in Harbor Country!
