Goshen Indiana Community of the YearGoshen, Indiana isn't the kind of place that everybody around the world has heard about. Yet, from its long history of RV manufacturing to its charming nickname of "The Maple City," there's just something about Goshen that entices so many visitors to learn more.

With a population around 31,000 and a location that's convenient to many larger communities, Goshen is mainly known around its home state for the Elkhart County 4-H Fair – one of the biggest county fairs anywhere in the country. Every year, participants travel from far and wide to see it.

Look a little closer, however, and there's even more to this town – after all, it was just named the 2017 Community of the Year by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.  Let's see what Goshen is really all about.

Goshen' s Commitment to a Vibrant Community Shines Through in a Rare Honor

The Indiana Chamber of Commerce works with towns and cities all across Indiana to foster a strong business community – particularly for small businesses – and ensure that local residents have all the amenities and opportunities they could want.

It's no surprise that Goshen faced stiff competition for Community of the Year, so what is this welcoming city's secret?

Locals have it down to a few factors:

  • Goshen Loves to Revitalize
Goshen is a fast-growing community, but it hasn't succumbed to sprawl. It looks to the past to support the future. Over the last several years, dozens of worn-out areas have been transformed into new cultural centers like The Hawks – once a factory, now live-work apartments for artists. It also loves green places, including two dozen parks and a scattering of wonderful lakes.

  • Goshen Supports Small Biz
The Goshen Chamber of Commerce is known for its Launchpad program, which helps startups get off the ground with shared office space. It also hosts Pitch Night, where would-be entrepreneurs have the opportunity to pitch their ideas to established peers and potentially win a cash prize. There's even some housing options especially for rising entrepreneurs.

  • Goshen Leads in Education
Goshen is known for some of the best public schools in the area, just one of many factors that makes it great for growing families. Goshen area high school students have the chance to take advantage of sophisticated college preparation and STEM education. Lots of students flow back into Goshen after graduation to continue the community's strong traditions.

  • Goshen is the RV Capital
Goshen is the seat of Elkhart County, which is responsible for about 50% of all the recreational vehicles that hit the domestic market. Local businesses have a strong reputation for investing in their workforce to keep this industry and others in Goshen healthy. Many of the top Goshen employers are known for great benefits, a commitment to talent development, and a true connection with the community.

  • Goshen Embraces the Arts
The Goshen art and entertainment scene is much bigger than you'd expect from a city its size. The Mayor's Arts Council is always working hard to foster a more creative and sustainable art scene. The historic Goshen Theater, River Bend Film Festival, and much more enliven the local culture all throughout the year. There's always something to see and do.
